dc.description.abstractThe Crown will lie, it will manipulate, it will change the law, it will do everything to maintain its power and that is the overt face of institutional racism. We know they will not muck around, if it comes to anything they will take whatever they need off us, to ensure they maintain their power... (Berghan, 2010, November 7, p. 6). Institutional racism, a pattern of differential access to material resources and power determined by race, which advantages one sector of the population while disadvantaging another. Such racism is not only about conspicuous acts of violence but can be manifest as relentless mono-cultural perspectives. Significant reports released in the 1980s documented widespread institutional racism within the administration of the public sector in Aotearoa over decades these findings have been consistently affirmed within Waitangi Tribunal reports and more recent research within the public health sector. This interactive workshop will familiarise participants with what institutional racism is? How it manifests within the public sector and offer some directions and opportunities to strategise how to transform such racism.
