Summary This research was conducted to explore existing knowledge of quality and effective support for family members and affected others (FAO) who are harmed by someone else’s gambling and to suggest opportunities for enhancing the support that is currently provided for FAOs by preventing and minimising gambling harm services in New Zealand. The research found the current gambling harm reduction support tends to be “gambler-centric” and clinical driven. There is a lack of clarity on a FAO-centred service model and service delivery. To facilitate system level change, the research suggests leveraging three principles: honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi by embedding genuine and empowering partnerships with Māori at all levels of our gambling harm reduction system, an integrative approach to ‘evidence-based practice’, and transformative action-oriented inquiry.
