dc.description.abstract[From first paragraph] This column provides a brief primer for educators and students on the process of developing a protocol as part of planning a multivocal literature review (MLR). It arises from reflections on supervising doctoral and postgraduate studies in contemporary computer science (CS) and software engineering (SE) topics. CS and SE research demands that we help students demonstrate a strong grounding in what Brinberg and McGrath have termed the “substantive domain” of large systems and software engineering practice.
