Abstract
Invisible Strings is a digitally illustrated picture book that explores how visual storytelling can make algorithmic influence on social media more visible. Focusing on Generation Z members of the Chinese diaspora, this project attempts to reveal how digital platforms shape attention, emotion and repeated online behaviour through familiar interfaces, personalised content and everyday habits.
The final work uses metaphor, atmosphere, character design and restrained interaction to translate hidden systems into a visual and reflective reading experience. It draws on techniques used in algorithms, data structures, digital systems and in part on a Chinese diasporic cultural perspective through selected symbolic elements that support recognition and gradual awakening.
Methodologically, the project utilises a practice-led and reflective approach to assess personal experience through a series of methods, including sketching, storyboarding, character development and prototyping.
