Abstract

Introduction. Basketball is among the fastest-growing sports in New Zealand, with participation quickly rising across all age groups and genders. This increased participation has coincided with a significant increase in basketball-related injuries. Despite the increase in popularity, minimal research has been conducted to assess the growing injury burden, or the incidence and prevalence of injuries in New Zealand Basketball. Purpose. To determine the injury incidence and prevalence in Basketball New Zealand (BBNZ). Methods. The study design was a 28-week cross-sectional observational study. The participants were New Zealand National and International athletes ranging from 16-to 30-years old who sustained an injury during gameplay from the following tournaments: U18 and U20 New Zealand Nationals, University Championships, the secondary school National Championship, FIBA men’s U17 Oceania Cup, FIBA women’s World Cup qualifiers, Asia Cup and the New Zealand women’s tour to Japan. Injury and time-loss definitions were applied to all competition-acquired injuries and recorded by tournament and team physiotherapists. Demographic data was analysed descriptively to assess normality using Statistical Package for Social Sciences for Mac (SPSS; V31.0.2.0). Descriptive analysis determined injury incidence and prevalence. Chi-square tests were used to determine injury frequency by body site and gender. Binary logistic regression examined relationships between body site and time loss. Results. The total number of participants was 1556, with 886 male athletes and 670 female athletes. Injury incidence was 16.40 injuries per 1000 hours of athlete exposures (AE). Time-loss injury incidence was 7.01 per 1000 hours of AE. Injury prevalence for BBNZ was 10.98. The most prevalent body site was the lower limb, markedly the ankle and knee. The head and spine resulted in greater time loss (p < 0.05). Conclusion. This research has provided baseline injury data for BBNZ and future recommendations for nationwide injury surveillance and prevention models.
