Abstract

KNITTED PAINTINGS is a textile design project examining the significance of design and technology in knitted textile production, using practice-based investigations as a means of facilitating unique contributions to contemporary modes of knitting. This project utilises sophisticated knitting technology to explore new techniques in digital design. It represents an evolution of expectations of knit design processes, through the use of new programming techniques that expand potential design aesthetics of knitted materials. This investigation aims to consider the technical and artistic challenges contemporary knitted textile designers face when accessing new knitting technologies. Through a discussion of the unique qualities of Jacquard knit techniques and design, the contextual framework informs practice-led investigations into new modes of colour work in knitted textiles. It investigates a method of programming that can minimise technical complications in manufacturing and increase pictorial aspects while still engaging in traditional tactic design processes.
