In a Rapidly Growing Industry, What Effect Does Video Game Use Have on Romantic Relationships? a Qualitative Study

Abstract

The concept of gaming addiction is still only understood by few. Additionally, the definition of Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) has yet to be appropriately conceptualised as demonstrated by the majority of studies in the field. This paper addresses the growing phenomenon of gaming dependence and addiction in New Zealand, and highlights the effects it has on the gamer, their romantic partner, and the romantic relationship. The current literature supports the view that excessive video game use decreases the gaming partner’s engagement in the relationship, much like gambling or alcoholism. This is demonstrated by reduced relational maintenance strategies and greater isolation in the relationship, allowing the relationship to slowly deteriorate unless gaming is reduced. Throughout this process the ‘gamer widow’ strives to cope with the emotional consequences and destructive effects on the romantic relationship, but often struggles greatly for a considerable amount of time until a state of learnt helplessness develops. The current study recruited 6 participants who all met the gamer widow criteria (to varying degrees). The findings of this study dictate that excessive use or preoccupation with gaming activities puts unnecessary stress on the romantic partner and the maintenance or growth of the romantic relationship. The possibility of gaming dependence (at the very least) must become recognised and accepted within broader society so that the romantic partners of problematic gamers, or close friends or family for that matter, are empowered to speak out about potentially harmful dependencies and to seek professional help.
