Abstract
This project is an exploration of identity in New Zealand Hip Hop culture captured through the video medium as a tool to translate. It raises issues of appropriation and authenticity of ‘street’ expression in Hip Hop culture within the context of New Zealand culture and how modes of identity are formulated (adopted and evolved) specific to a suburban/ urban audience and site. Importantly, the focus of this project framed within this concept, will shift through it’s responsive approach and nature as an attempt to cross boundaries through documentation/ documentary representation, digital video processes and the negotiation of video to installation space in practice. The aim is to develop a succession of responsive drawings, video and installation works to test, communicate, shift and inform the final project, which will be a large-scale video installation.Description
