Evolving the Karang, a word used to describe a traditional Balinese family compound or village, explores the intricate relationship between the island’s tourism and architecture, examining how these elements intertwine and coexist within the cultural landscape of Bali. Beyond this academic investigation, the thesis also reflects my personal journey of discovering and reconnecting with my cultural heritage. It symbolises an attempt to bridge the gap between my Western background in New Zealand and the traditional, cultural, and tourism-driven context of Bali. Through this exploration, the work seeks to highlight the complexities of cultural identity, the fusion of diverse influences, and the role of architecture in shaping and expressing cultural narratives in a globalised world.
