Abstract

Business process management is an integral part of a business. Internet of things (IoT) is an emerging and fast improving technology. Traditional business process models have not given much attention to IoT. Yet, it has become a necessity to incorporate IoT systems and components when modelling business processes to obtain the many benefits IoT offers. Therefore, we aimed to fill this gap by identifying business process modeling requirements for IoT, i.e. IoT modelling elements and to demonstrate the applicability of them in a business process model. We identified seven key IoT modelling elements after deriving them from a typical problem scenario. We investigated the properties of IoT components in detail, illustrating them in class hierarchy design and describing common properties in super classes. We extended BPMN 2.0 in designing these IoT elements and implemented them in an IoT related business process model. We also developed a web based IoT aware BPMN and XPDL editor tool by extending an existing BPMN editor. Furthermore, we evaluated the applicability of this IoT aware BPMN modelling tool with a case study.
