The Seddonian was the official annual publication of Seddon Memorial Technical College, capturing the vibrant life of an institution that played a pivotal role in shaping technical education in Auckland. The earliest publications in this digitised collection date from 1911, originally produced for Auckland Technical College, the direct precursor to Seddon Memorial Technical College. In 1916, the college launched its official annual magazine, The Seddonian, which continued until 1987, featuring articles, photographs, and reports on academic, cultural, and sporting achievements. Its early editions were printed by the college’s own printing classes, reflecting a strong vocational ethos.
This collection chronicles the evolution of an educational institution that began as Auckland Technical School (1895), became Auckland Technical College (1906), then Seddon Memorial Technical College (1913), and later transitioned into tertiary education as Auckland Technical Institute (ATI) in the 1960s. In 1989, ATI became Auckland Institute of Technology (AIT), and in 2000, it achieved university status as Auckland University of Technology (AUT).
Digitising The Seddonian preserves this unique historical journey, showcasing the transformation from a technical school to a modern university and reflecting the changing landscape of education in New Zealand.
