Abstract

Aquarium follows the story of Fetu, a 20-year-old Samoan who struggles to accept his sexuality because of his religious mother, Maria, who is trying to win the mayoral election in their small town. Fetu and Maria have always supported and encouraged each other, however, cracks begin to tear their relationship apart as Maria turns to homophobic campaigning to win over the town’s community. Fetu is forced into a deceitful routine to desperately hide his secret, but his plans a ruined when a dreamy boy shows up in town, as Fetu cant seem to stay away from him. Fetu is challenged as he journeys through self-acceptance, struggling friendships, public scandals, first love, and discrimination. All of which build up to the point where Fetu comes out to his mother. Maria’s reaction surprises Fetu, which leads up to a public protest against Maria, showing that he isn’t afraid to stand up and believe in himself.
